The main objective of <code>elsarticle.cls</code> is to standardize the TeX sources of author submissions and to minimize surprises during subsequent processing of your document. You need not try to emulate the exact page layout of the final copy. The main reason is that your document goes through another transformation process in which your LaTeX document will be converted into XML/MathML format for archival and web delivery purposes and the final print version is derived from this XML/MathML document.
